PINOLE / 3 animal-rights activists get prison time / Terms from federal judge in New Jersey range from 4-6 years:
"Three animal rights activists from Pinole were sentenced Tuesday to four to six years in prison on federal charges of conspiring to stalk, harass and intimidate employees of a New Jersey scientific testing firm and the companies that do business with that firm.
Kevin Kjonaas, 28, Lauren Gazzola, 27, and Jacob Conroy, 30, were also ordered by U.S. District Judge Anne Thompson in Trenton, N.J., to pay a total of $1 million in restitution to Huntingdon Life Sciences, which uses animals for laboratory research and testing.
The three were part of Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty USA, which is devoted to trying to put the East Millstone, N.J., company out of business.
Kjonaas, a former president of the group, received a six-year sentence. Gazzola, the former campaign coordinator, received a 52-month sentence, and Conroy, a coordinator and the group's Web site manager, received a four-year sentence.
The judge will sentence Joshua Harper, 31, the group's West Coast coordinator, today and two other defendants, New York coordinator Andrew Stepanian, 27, and Darius Fullmer, 29, on Tuesday. Federal prosecutors dropped charges last year against a seventh defendant, John McGee.
